Indian students shine with historic performance at International Olympiads for Informatics

Indian students excel at Informatics Olympiads

In a momentous achievement, a team of four Indian students participated in the International Olympiads for Informatics (IOI), one of the world's premier science olympiads. India's participation in this global competition spans 22 years, and this year marked a significant milestone as the Indian team secured a gold medal after a nine-year hiatus. This victory was India's second gold at the IOI, the previous one being in 2014.

The Indian team comprised four exceptionally talented students who not only participated but also excelled in the competition. Kshitij Sodani emerged as the gold medalist, showcasing his exceptional skills. Paras Kasmalkar and Shreyan Ray demonstrated their prowess by clinching silver medals, while Sushil Raaja U added to the team's glory with a bronze medal. The team was under the able leadership of Madhavan Mukund, the director of Chennai Mathematical Institute, and Jatin Yadav from IIT Delhi. The IOI was hosted in Szeged, Hungary.

Remarkable achievement

This year's IOI performance has been historic for India, representing the best showing to date. According to statistics available on the IOI website, the Indian team's accomplishments have surpassed previous records.

Kshitij Sodani, the gold medalist, has been a consistent performer at the IOI. His journey began in 2020 when he clinched a bronze medal. He continued to shine with silver medals in 2021 and 2022, culminating in a gold medal in 2023. Notably, Kshitij holds the distinction of being the sole Indian student to achieve four consecutive medals at the IOI. In 2020, he made history by becoming the youngest medalist at just 14 years old. This year, at the age of 17, he achieved another milestone by becoming the youngest-ever gold medalist.

Kshitij's accomplishments extend beyond the IOI. He secured a gold medal at the Asia Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) in 2023, hosted in Beijing. This marks India's second gold medal at the APIO, with the last gold medal being awarded 14 years ago.
